Clothing Labels & Hangtags: Compliance, Customization & Cost

August 20, 202610 min readBy Essty Garment

Labels and hangtags are the smallest, most-overlooked part of a garment — and the easiest way to get stopped at customs or sued by a retailer. They're also your cheapest branding surface. This guide covers what's legally required, what's customizable, and what it costs.

Mandatory Label Content (by market)

MarketRequired on label
United StatesFiber content, country of origin, manufacturer/importer identity, care instructions (FTC Care Label Rule)
European UnionFiber content, origin, care symbols (GINETEX), identity of responsible person
United KingdomSimilar to EU post-Brexit; UKCA considerations for general product safety
AustraliaFiber content, care, supplier details (mandatory under ACL)
Compliance risk: Missing or false fiber content is the most common apparel recall trigger. A "100% cotton" label on a 95/5 blend is a legal problem, not a typo.

Types of Labels

Hangtags

Hangtags are pure marketing: price, story, barcode, sustainability claims. They're not legally required but expected by retailers. Keep them recyclable and compliant with any "recycled" claim you print.

Cost Picture

ItemTypical cost
Woven main label$0.05-$0.15/pc (at 500+)
Care label (printed)$0.02-$0.06/pc
Hangtag + string$0.04-$0.12/pc
Custom die-cut hangtag$0.10-$0.30/pc
Tip: Combine your main label + care label into one woven edge label to save a sewing operation and cut cost. Many factories offer this as a standard option.

Customization Without a Huge MOQ

If your batch is small, use heat-transfer labels (no weaving MOQ) for branding and reserve woven labels for once you're reordering at volume. This keeps per-unit label cost under $0.10 even at 100 pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for correct label content?

The brand/importer is legally responsible, not the factory. Supply the exact fiber breakdown and care text to the factory; don't assume they'll get it right.

Can I use one label for all markets?

Only if it carries the strictest combined requirements (fiber, origin, care in symbols, identity). Many brands print bilingual care labels to cover EU + UK.

What's the lowest label MOQ?

Heat-transfer and printed labels can start at 100 pieces. Woven labels usually need 100-500. Choose the former for small batches.
