E-commerce Clothing Photography: A Manufacturer's Prep Checklist
Your product photos are the product online. Buyers can't touch the fabric or check the stitching, so every purchase decision happens in a 2-second glance at a thumbnail. This is the shot list and prep checklist we give every client — and most of it you can shoot yourself, no studio required.
The Shots Every Product Page Needs
| Shot | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front flat / ghost mannequin | Hero image, clean silhouette | White background, straight-on, no wrinkles |
| Back view | Shows back detail, length | Same framing as front |
| Side / 3/4 view | Fit and drape | Reveals how fabric falls |
| Detail — collar/neckline | Construction quality | Macro, sharp focus |
| Detail — fabric texture | Hand-feel & weight | Close-up in natural light |
| Detail — trims (zipper/buttons) | Hardware quality | Macro, no glare |
| On-model front + back | Fit & proportion | Neutral pose, real size |
| Flat lay (styled) | Social / lifestyle | Lifestyle props, overhead angle |
| Scale reference | Size clarity | Optional — hand or ruler beside item |
Prep Before You Shoot
- Steam or iron every garment. Wrinkles read as poor quality, even on a $200 dress.
- Shoot on a size that matches your model. Oversized or undersized samples distort the fit in photos.
- Use a dress form or ghost mannequin for consistency across styles.
- Set white balance so fabric color is true — the #1 reason for "color didn't match" returns.
- Shoot in diffused natural light (near a large window) or two softboxes; avoid direct flash.

DIY vs. Outsourcing
| Approach | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Phone + natural light + backdrop | $0–$50 | Startup proof-of-concept, first 20 SKUs |
| Lightbox + softboxes + tripod | $150–$400 | Consistent flat/ghost shots, growing catalog |
| Freelance photographer | $30–$100/SKU | Hero + lifestyle when you can batch 10+ SKUs |
| Studio retainer | $1,000+/mo | Scaling brands with frequent drops |
What Your Factory Can Provide
Most factories (including us) can supply pre-production sample photos — flat, front/back, and detail shots — as part of sampling. These are not marketing-grade lifestyle images, but they are excellent for internal approval, spec confirmation, and as placeholders while you arrange a shoot. Ask for:
- Flat front/back at standard framing
- Macro of trims and seams
- Fabric texture close-up
- Color reference next to a Pantone chip if color accuracy matters
Frequently Asked Questions
How many photos does one product page need?
Minimum five: front, back, side/3-4 view, one fabric detail, one trim detail. Add on-model shots and lifestyle imagery as budget allows. More images correlate with higher conversion, up to roughly 8–10 per product.
Can I use my phone for product photos?
Yes, for flat lays and detail shots in good natural light. Use a tripod, manual exposure, and a white-balance lock to keep colors consistent. For hero shots you may still want a DSLR or lightbox.
Should the main image have a white or lifestyle background?
White background for marketplace listings (Amazon, Google Shopping require it) and clean e-commerce PDPs. Lifestyle images belong in the gallery and on social, not as the main marketplace image.
How do I keep colors accurate across a whole collection?
Shoot everything in one session under the same light, use the same white-balance setting, and include a gray card in the first shot of each session for post-correction. Mixing sessions under different light causes visible color shifts.
